Since its inception in 1957 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Sister City program has furthered international understanding and cooperation. It is through international relations like these that cities can build social, economic, and cultural ties that link individuals across thousands of miles, and help us peacefully to embrace our differences.
South Bend established its first Sister City relationship in 1992 with Czestochowa, Poland, and in 2005, formalized its relationship with Arzberg, Germany. These relationships reflect South Bend's Polish and German heritage, which are an important part of our city's history. However, they do not tell the complete story - South Bend is home to residents of Italian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Thai, and Belgian descent, among others! At this time, we are actively researching South Bend's connection with African and Central American countries, in order to establish Sister City relationships that will celebrate our African American and Latino communities.
