The Special Operations Division is responsible for the areas of the department that are not directly related to Fire Suppression or EMS.  These include:

• Hazardous Materials Response Team
• Swiftwater Response Team
• Tactical Rescue Response Team
• Administration of the Indiana River Rescue School

Nationwide, the Hazardous Materials units have been given the task of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) preparedness.  This has evolved our Special Operations Division to become the Homeland Security branch of the Fire Department.  Our Response Teams respond to calls not only within the City of South Bend, but also the Indiana Homeland Security District #2 which covers seven counties.  This allows the South Bend Fire Department to be on the leading edge of information and preparedness.
