Local industrialist Vincent Bendix, whose company was instrumental in the development of aviation systems, began construction on the South Bend Regional Airport in 1929. Back then, the airport logged a handful of flights, which were posted on a chalkboard, outdoors, near a dirt runway. Today, the South Bend Regional Airport is the only airport in the United States to offer air, intercity rail and interstate bus service all at one convenient location. More than one million travelers are served here annually.
The South Bend Regional Airport is the transportation hub of South Bend, offering flights from Allegiant Air, Continental Connection, Delta Connection, Northwest/KLM Airlines and United Express.
